Why Men Don't Seem to be hitting it right

As we drove through traffic tonight, I couldn’t help but acknowledge Fashola’s (Fashola is Lagos State Governor)effort in turning Lagos into a real beauty. The streets are neater; there are perfectly working streets lights and clean roads amongst other things. I am always fascinated about Lagos, most especially about ‘Lagosians’. They work hard and play hard as well. That is evident on a typical Friday night like this. Most people are still dressed in their office clothes. Although one would expect to see to see worn out and tired looking faces, but surprisingly, everyone’s looking very excited and ready to have fun. I am particularly excited myself; the feeling in the air was simply contagious.

Its some minutes to 10pm, gradually we get closer to Ahmadu Bello, Victoria Island. Where the popular silverbird galleria is located, the multiple awards winning movie- Slumdog Millionaire - is showing for the first time today and the crowd is crazy! Alighting from the car with my five other friends, I look around, trying to see if there’s someone I know, maybe an old friend, co-worker or perhaps, an ex-boyfriend. Not finding any one, I joined my friends as we all walk into the galleria. Slumdog Millionaire is not showing until 10:45 so we still have enough time to freshen up at the ladies, buy popcorn and purchase our tickets.

We decided to go into the cinema before the movie starts so we can choose perfect seats as to avoid disappointments. As we sat waiting, being the chicks that we are, we gisted, gossiped and giggled. Ore, my oldest friend started to tell me something about an old schoolmate she bumped into in Ikeja today and how she told her she was getting married the next month. As the information sunk in, I couldn’t help but feel a little bit jealous. I remember the girl in question; she was one of those girls, who tried to be friends with me but I always felt we had nothing in common. She was a full time “aristo” chick-and the last person I would ever expect to settle down.

Ore’s gist rang an echo as I reflected about my life-the perfect picture of a successful young woman. Beautiful, educated, good job, nice car, cozy apartment, church-goer, loving family and friends…The only problem is, I do not have a boyfriend. Okay, honestly, I have a ‘boyfriend’ but it’s like those relationships that both parties have an unwritten agreement of no commitment. At twenty-four, that doesn’t seem to be a huge problem one might say, but in a society like ours where a woman’s success is hugely determined by her marital status, you will agree with me that it is indeed worth having sleepless nights over.
