Tips for stylish and festive decorations this Christmas

By Emma Love

Christmas is nearly here and now is your chance to make your home look decorative and fabulously festive.

The biggest decision is your colour scheme and the look you want. Keep it simple and you can't go wrong.

Take the White Company dining table; its classic and classy with silver beaded placemats, a table runner and different sized candles. Beautiful on its own, it is also a good framework within which to add splashes of colour.

No Christmas lunch is complete without crackers and Selfridges have some colourful vintage stamp designs.

You don't have to spend a fortune to make your home look fabulous. Ellie Tennant, who writes for Ideal Home magazine and runs Ideal Home's brilliant Home ShoppingSpy blog, has tips on making your own decorations.

'Use plain white paper to make simple yet elegant paper-chains and snowflakes, and create pretty tea-light votives by wrapping strips of paper doilies around small jam jars, secured with ribbon,' she says.

'For your tree, buy white ribbon and strips of lace to make pretty bows to tie to the branches and the top.' If you can't bear falling pine needles, Marks & Spencer has a 3ft fake silver tree.

Add a few innovative baubles to your homemade efforts, such the Union Jack, London skyline or campervans by Bombki (notonthehighstreet.com).

Lettering is a big trend in interiors. John Lewis has the words Noel, Joy and Peace or you can buy letters individually.

They will look good over a fireplace or on a dresser, with candles and holly.

Laura Ashley has some lovely red table accessories, from a Christmas tree candle to napkin holders.

Or take Ellie Tennant's advice: 'Gather pine cones, spray-paint them white, then arrange them in a big glass bowl with silver baubles for a stunning table centrepiece.'
