The Classic Man
By Garba Bashr

Many a gender pundits have debated on the true definition of ‘A classic Man’ and so has the female pundits. But the answers have always ended up been distorted, imprecise to be precise. Whilst some have regarded classic in its literal meaning, some have resorted to equate a classic man as a daily listener of Ludwig van Beethoven. In this debut column, I, being a man have decided to take the responsibility of re- orienting my esteemed readers, especially my female readers, on this topic.

By perchance you may agree with me on this; the first ‘Classic Man’ was Adam. Ergo, the definition of a classic man is this simple; A paradigm of Adam: - Simple, sincere, unpredictable, crude and naive maybe, but totally down-to-earth. A dictionary definition of classic did not disagree either. It defined it as: ‘always fashionable and elegant, usually because of simplicity and restraint in style.’ Note the word, simplicity.

In truth, by these standards, there are quite few classic men, just like there are very few Eve-risqué-like-classic women. (A topic for another day). Whoever said ‘Simple’ isn’t the most complex phenomenon there is? Believe me, this isn’t a pre- historic assertion. Simple is still the vogue, it is simply classic, as confirmed by the majority of the youth- age standards.

My girlfriend never mind if I wear a pair of blue jeans, a white T- Shirt and a pair of white sneakers or black Italian slippers for dinner. Likewise, I wouldn’t care if she wore a simple pair of strapless light green frock to see my parents. You see, aren’t we just the classic Couple? Just like Barrack and Michelle Obama! (Lol...)

In our contemporary perception, a classic man is he who has it all; money, power, women, charisma, charm et al. A survey conducted online revealed that 62% of those that partook in it believe that been classic has to do with how you present yourself, how you walk, talk or your general persona.

How would you know a man is classic? One; when he is truly classy, athletic built, tall, and soft, but confident spoken, humorous, always wearing a grin? Now, that I call Denzel Washington- kind of- Classic. In reality, there are different kinds of classic men. To some ladies, a classic man is all but a classic man. I mean, to these group, sassy, confident, experienced, arrogant even, depicts a classic man, which in essence, is not so classic. To some however, a classic man is the crude but gentle and considerate, soft but confident, emotional but tough, experienced but humble kind of guy that pecks you softly on the chin, whisper even incongruent but sweet words in your ears in the morning and leaves for work because he felt you deserved to sleep at least two extra hours more than he does.

Two; a classic man is cherished by loved ones, adored by colleagues, idolised by youngsters and respected by superiors. A classic man is brave enough to propose to you on the day he got fired from work. Maybe, even brave enough to promise you a free gate pass to heaven!
