David Beckham is the only reason that I would ever enter an athletic store, which is how I found myself in the Adidas emporium on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles, sitting across from Becks (as I’m told people call him) and shoe sage James Bond (yes, that is his name). I was there to view their new Original by Original line for Adidas. James owns the sneaker chain Undefeated, which has six locations worldwide, including an outpost on La Brea in Los Angeles; it’s such a cool place to shop that it’s been name-dropped on Entourage. His collaboration with David came together about a year and a half ago, after he met the footballer’s wife, Victoria Beckham.
“James met Victoria about five years ago in the store, then we moved to L.A. two and a half years ago,” David told me. “When I’ve traveled around the world, I’ve always kind of tried to find out where the best sneaker stores are, and where the most original sneaker stores are, and when I came to L.A., someone pointed me in Undefeated’s direction. And I went down there and, you know, loved the vibe in the store, and then met James.” The ObyO line includes everything from a brushed-cotton fleece cardigan and leather track jacket to dress pants with a sports-pants feel and shoes with a signature D.B. logo. “We’ve kept it quite original and quite classic, but also with a different twist,” David said. “We tried to create something that is right for everybody.” Yet the footballer still hasn’t convinced his wife to ditch her poshness and wear his sneakers. “I know with Victoria and Victoria’s friends, it’s one of the first things a woman looks at—the shoes,” Beckham said. “It kind of tells the personality of a person.” Later in the evening, the clothing line’s launch party brought out an array of celebrities—Ben Stiller, Eva Longoria, Snoop Dogg, Rashida Jones, and Anthony Michael Hall among them. What do you expect when the event is being hosted by citizen of the world, style icon, and athletic god David Beckham? Everyone wants a piece.
